Historical outline of the Procession of The Penitents

In 1637, canon J.Clou of the Saint-Nicolas abbey of Veurne founded the "Sodality of the Crucified Saviour". This Sodality organised a procession for the first time in 1646.

Since then the Sodality has organised the Way of the Cross in the city every Friday evening during Lent and the well-known "Penitential Procession" on the last Sunday of July.
